I am certain I have seen pictures of a sort of oversize poncho... for the Willys MB/Ford GPW. Same as Furze’s idea but it somehow clipped to the bodywork, much in the same way an old duster coat used to clip to the saddle. A sort of wearable tonneau cover, if you will.
I think it was a project of special equipment for Arctic conditions but cannot remember whether it passed the prototype stage.
Does it sound familiar to any of you?

By the way, Colin is brilliant!

I remember seeing something similar during the 40s-50s sports car racing where they would cover most of the passenger area with a leather or canvas sheet.

That would be a tonneau cover.
The funny thing about the “Jeep poncho” is that it even had a hood for the “wearer” (not sure about sleeves, but quite likely). I can imagine it would be one hundred times warmer than any other solution they thought of at the time.
